Kind of surprised. Called Google Customer support and the rep told me that the warranty is not available unless I purchased the phone from Google. My phone was purchased from Verizon. Google is missing the boat on this one. When I had my Iphone purchased from Verizon I was able to call Apple Care and they ran a diagnostic over the phone, told me my phone was good to go, and issued the Apple Care. This is an important revenue stream that Google is missing the boat on. Hope the info is wrong, but the rep seemed sure of it. comments?

This is the way it has been with Nexus. You either have to order the phone with it from Google, or subscribe to the monthly fee on Project Fi within 30 days of receiving your phone. Pixel was the same way through Project Fi.

My recollection is that there were no exceptions other than to return the phone and reorder from Google/Project Fi.

I think you misunderstood, they are saying you can only purchase the device protection if you order from the Google store. All pixels come with a standard one year warranty.

I understand the 1 year. I was looking for the additional year.

Is it really a revenue streams for Google? They are using a third party service, so it seems like it's a service that they pass on as a convenience that provides revenue for someone else.

1) They are not sold out on VZ
2) I'm fine with 7.1 knowing updates will take awhile

You must also be fine with:
3) Bloatware
4) Absolutely non-sensical swaps of google's apps with Verizon's own bullcrap. I had a Note 7 till they took it away and the Verizon install/build of the software was hilarious (I am not on Verizon, just watched my friends)
5) Locked boot loader

Basically, you are forgoing every advantage of getting a vanilla Nexus / Pixel phone by buying it from Verizon. Carriers selling phones and thinking their customers are too dumb to realize what they are getting is such an outdated concept. The world has moved on.

You know how to uninstall apps right? If so, then bloat ware is not an issue. And obviously "the world" has not moved on from buying phones from carriers as carriers are still selling hundreds of thousands of phones per year.

The world has definitely moved on - contracts are done so carriers don't subsidize phones anymore (I do know there are some stragglers, but thats where the industry is headed) and they have also minimized effing with the device software. Tmobile started the trend, and now most carriers have trended that way. Yes, you get carrier bloatware with other carriers as well, but Verizon is the worst.

Verizon should stick to being a hardware network operator. I don't see any logic in them trying to develop "VZ Navigator" or "VZ messaging" Software is best left to companies that are good at it. Heard of google?

-Bloat can be removed
-No swap of apps
-I haven't rooted a phone in years. Never unlocked my nexus 5, 6, 5x, or 6p

I ordered from Google but other than (possibly) delayed updates there would be no other reason for me *not* to order from Verizon.

With all the news as to why you SHOULDN'T buy the pixel on Verizon, why would you?

Not a big fan of big red (or blue), but if you have a corporate account you can still save big on hardware.

Just sayin'...

Bloat and custom apps cannot be removed from Verizon or AT&T these days. And with the locked bootloader, you cannot change the OS. As you have had a Nexus 5, 6, 5x, and 6p, I'd guess you haven't been in the carrier-controlled cell phone market in at least 3 years to see the horror show of it.

With the experience I am having with the 6p I will never buy anywhere then the google store. I would much rather work their their support then anyone else.

I'm talking about the Pixel. And I'm currently typing on a VZW branded phone.

That kind of stinks! So if I order from anyone but Google I can only get device protection from that seller not Google?
