I know this is a personal preference but the previews all seem like robot responses to what I guess is the new "hotness"?

I'm always trying to get closer to my subject and not including extra things that take away from the shot I want.

Sorry a little rant. I'm much more pleased with telephoto rather than wide angle.

I've had phones with both and I found the ultra wide angle way more useful than a telephoto. I guess depends on the type of photo taking you tend to do. Mine is mostly travel photography (landscapes, cities, architecture etc).

I'm with you on the telephoto.

Why not both.

My thoughts on that are that it was much more natural for Google to go this way at first because of all the work they have done on super rez zoom. I like the focus on one thing at a time to get right rather than screw it lets throw in everything because it's popular for some.

The wide angle is what kept me with LG for so many years. Was so useful. Particularly when taking photos of people like at parties or dinner. Easy to fit everyone in without having to walk back 10 feet.

But like others said..........why not both? Why omit something that most other flagships have.

I feel confident they could have gotten both telephoto and wide-angled right, but who knows. Either way, the decision doesn't make them feel focused, just makes them feel behind, unfortunately.

Disappointed no wide angle. Anyone know if the telephoto lens is similar to that on the Huawei P30?

Haven't used telephoto ever and 2x optical is near useless when all telephoto cameras are what 20-30x these days
Wide angle is a wide angle, that's why wide angle camera cost way more then telephoto.
Google's reason telling people They think telephoto is more important is obviously BS. The only reason they didn't include it is money, save some now and dont have to innovate in the future, it will be a huge technological breakthrough in Pixel 5 next year

And, I'm the opposite. Years ago I had a DSLR with a zoom and my software told me in the computer what focal length I was using for photos. I was surprised at how much more often I was the wide side rather than the telephoto side. As I recall, bumping against the bottom and the top was about 5 to 1 in favor of the wide-angle. My brother-in-law whose passion is birds would be the opposite.

I'd rather wide angle... But they should have both IMO ... I'd like to see some reviews on the telephoto how good on this phone once it's in people's hands ...

For wild life you definitely need tele, and its definitely not a smartphone with 2x zoom :)

Totally agree. I'm always moving closer to capture a shot. Can't remember when I've had to move back. I'm certain that many of the negative comments are knee jerk reactions to the lack of a wide angle option.

That said, it's still a personal preference.

I don't know about others but I don't think it's a knee jerk reaction for a lot of people. Wide angles are very useful depending on what you like to photograph. I find you can often move closer to something but it's often harder or impossible to back up to take group or landscape shots. Having 3 lenses gives you everything.

I take pictures of people mostly (my family) and of course usually it's with some sort of background. I was never in any situation where I couldn't just move forward, moving backwards that far is usually not an option

During last vacation it was a challenge to place a phone somewhere and get everyone in a shot, and getting it done with a timer.

Exactly, the only time I can't move closer is due to immovable objects or alligators
