Xoom is is NICE!, But $800 plus aint NICE!

Very overpriced especially to not have apps ready so you can actually use it like a tablet. In a few months the price will be lowered OR there will be a better tablet like the iPad 2 or another Android one that will be cheaper and have the same functionality. People that say they are completely satisfied are probably telling the truth but there are some that need to make themselves feel like they made a good purchase. Right now, it's just an over hyped slab that is vastly overpriced. Just like the crappy Logitech Revue and Sony Google TV blu ray player. Overhyped, overpriced and underperforming.

There's so much I want to say but your last word left me in awe.

Underperforming? Really?

Anyone that owns a XOOM would know that underperforming is NOT a word that describes it by any means. It might be expensive ($70 more than the sacred iPad), and it might not have all the apps just yet, but underperforming is an outlandish statement that is clearly coming from someone who is ignorant on the subject.

I was under the impression that the requirement from Verizon was dropped as well if you go to Best Buy.

$799 with no required plan at BB
or
$599 with 2 year contract with verizon

So $70 for a tablet that is 3x the tablet of the ipad. Data plans will be comparable on both. I can't believe that people are even comparing this thing to an ipad. In my humble opinion the xoom is closer to my laptop than it is an ipad. ipad is the iphone's big brother, and thats it.

I knew about the data plan change by Verizon but, I still wanted the plan. I was just talking about buying the Ipad and how it was a better experience for me personally.

I was just at the verizon store today. They had the xoom and I pad side by side. I spent considerable time on both. I walked out with the xoom and that's is where I am sending this message from.

The xoom is by no means a perfect device, one doesn't exist. But so far I am very impressed. Very fluid, fast and responsive. Apps will continue to roll out over time...this thing has only been on the market for 2 days. (Btw...beautiful widgets works for me along with other non-tablet apps)

I was holding out for a bit to see about the ipad2...but when I read all the expected specs, coupled with no major changes to the OS and UI....knew it wasn't worth waiting for. To each there own though.

Well said

I don't think the device is overpriced, but they have to provide an a la carte plan for non contract xooms like the ipad has. It's ridiculous to pay a activation fee every time there's a month off of service.

I'm not sure you're understanding me. I didn't say I didn't like the Xoom or that the Ipad is better. I like the Xoom a lot more than the Ipad. I said when I bought the Ipad it was a better experience, meaning customer service & buying experience.

If fact I'm going through something right now with them (Verizon). They have me as signed up for a 2 year contract although I paid full price and specifically stated that I wanted month to month. I've been going through all kinds of crap trying to get this straightened out.

I love the Xoom but, I hate dealing with Verizon.

I gotcha. That stinks. My experience was easy as 1-2-3. After I made the final decision to make the purchase I was out the store in 10 minutes without a hitch. I haven't had verizon before so I can't really speak to if that is a common issue. You might of just had a jerky of a sales rep that didn't know what they were doing. Hope it all works out for you.

Xoom is dope. I can't wait for Xda to get honeycomb on my tab. If the xoom was 7" I'd be sending this from that. 800 seem lake a good price if youre thinking computer which it is. Not so good if you're thinking phone.

I'm glad your experience was better. The salesperson was nice but, I just don't think he knew what he was doing. It took him a long time to get everything together. He was kind of making me nervous because he had my Xoom in the box, standing on it's edge vertically. The box bottom kept creeping out and, I was scared he was going to drop it.

I'm sure it will all get worked out, I don't want to take it back because I've already loaded all my stuff on it and, I really like it. It's just frustrating not being able to get any answers from Verizon, they want me to go back to Costco because they claim they can't access my information.

It's all crazy because now, I actually wouldn't mind having a contract because of the deal I found out I can get through my job but, if they are going to do that, I want $200 back so, I will have paid the contract price. Anyway I'm rambling and going off on a tangent. I love the Xoom.

$599 subsidized is not that bad?

Am I the only one that thinks the Xoom is reasonably priced at $599 subsidized? $20 bucks for 1 gb of data isn't too shabby considering that the Xoom includes hotspot and tethering capabilities at no extra charge. Also, I was told that 4g service would not cost anything additional.

I don't have a problem with the pricing of the data plans at all, this 1 that I am working on now is subsidized with a 1 gigabyte data plan. However I was lucky enough to get the errored 200 dollar motorola discount and hopefully I will see that 1 next week and no 1 I'm out now will the returned.

Quoting myself here... he he

I just chatted with a second VZN rep who said that you only have to pay an activation fee once if you are not on contract, then you can go a la carte. It'd be nice if I could see this stuff in writing somewhere.

No, I'm sure most of us here that bought it already think it was a fair price...or we might not of bought it.

The only issue that I have with the price is that I missed out on that amazon deal! Pains me every minute.

COME ON PEOPLE!

I cant believe what I am reading on this thread, makes me so sad. (not everyone has made dumb comments, but the ones that have YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE)

Is the XOOM overpriced? Yes (I can almost see the face expressions of all the people that disagree with me but listen to me and if you disagree let me know)
The ipad2 is coming this year and I am sure the price wont change much, it will probably go up but not a lot. If you think the Xoom is well price by comparing it to the ipad you are wrong, stop pretending otherwise, you would not compare a windows laptop to a mac in price, would you? no because you know macs are way overpriced, guess what? same goes for the ipads. look at the view sonic g tab or at the Notion ink adam, they have very similar specs yet the price is so much different. the adam with 3g and a QI display is $550 shipped to your door and not to mention is made by a tiny start up company! Motorola with its buying power and experiences surely got a better deal on components than these new guys and motorola knows how to make android devices, yet this little company somehow can make a product that is in in a similar class (Yes adam does not have 3.0 but the product was out before that and judging by specs it will be upgraded) I am not pretending that the xoom is not better that those devices but lets not pretend that they are very different ether.

If you are comparing it to cellphones you are wrong also, unsubsidized cellphones are overpriced, why? because of the carriers, they want to lock you into contracts and they know you wont sign if your not "saving" some good change. they subsidize the phone for you but I doubt they pay the retail price for it, look at the galaxy player, its goes for about $250 do you think the radios are worth the other $250+ a galaxy s cellphones go for? no, the cellphone companies want to keep the retail prices high so you sign contracts and the phone companies are in it.

Now lets say nothing I said above is true right. its still overpriced, yes that's right, why? because most people don't care about the 3g/LTE they just want a tablet, so basically IF you have no intentions of ever paying for data you are paying an extra $200 for components you wont use, is like paying for a fully loaded car if you don't intend to ever use those extra features (yes that would be stupid but I could not think of a different analogy, you get my point)

now to the comments that I really disliked, to all those snobby people that act like they can afford anything, maybe you really can, good for you, most people can afford the xoom, is not like is a Porsche but the average person knows how to use their money wisely and know not to over pay for something, like some other members here said, its not whether its affordable or not but you wouldn't pay extra for something that is not worth it.

If you ate buying the subsidized version please disregard as you are probably going to use the tab to its full potential and the extra cost is worth it to you.

I am not saying I am right in everything I said but I think these are some strong points, if you don't I would like to hear your side.

Not necessarily disagreeing with your overall point, but I don't the NI adam is best comparison. First, it's $600 for the 3G/Qi shipped. Second, it's taking at least a month between when someone orders the NI Adam and it arrives at your door and the process isn't exactly clear. Third, you can't even order the Adam presently. Fourth, because it's such a new company- how can you trust that you'll get honeycomb on the device. Also, the g-tablet isn't the best comparison either. It doesn't have 3g and like it or not that is at least a $130 premium. Also the g-tablet off the shelf is borderline unusable without rooting and installing a custom. Neither of these can be mass market devices in their present form.

The real question is- what is going on with the wifi only versions of these tablets? I think there is no question that the carriers are holding up the price on the tablets and that most consumers want the wifi version only. If the xoom launched with a wifi only for $600 along side their 3g/LTE version, this conversation would probably not gain as much traction. We're STILL waiting for the wifi only 7" galaxy tab. My guess is that the manufacturers think that current android tablets are still only for the cutting/edge early adopter types. They have worked out some sort of distribution deal with the carriers because they figure it'll be a while before they are mass market and that is giving the carriers a lot of say in the price structure. I suspect manufacturers will have their most competitive products out in time for the next holiday season.

Everyone has their own personal idea of how much they are willing to spend to be an early adopter on a device like this. I was fortunate enough to get the 25% coupon on the xoom and bought it in a heartbeat. I would never have bought it off contract otherwise, but I had considered buying it on contract before the coupon dropped.

Jonagpa has an excellent point. The main complaint against Apple is that their products are overpriced but yet there's no mention of that when noting that the Xoom is $70 more than the comparable iPad.

I think if Motorola had come out with different tiers of Xooms, the sticker shock would have been easier to swallow.

Honestly, I think the subsidized price from Verizon should have been $499, not $599. That's a much more attractive price and I bet they would have had a lot more luck selling it.
