Xoom--Not selling very well

Also the cost of shipping the Zooms back in for the LTE upgrade probably also drove the price up. I bet that after they start shipping new units with the LTE chips there will be a price drop.

Exactly. This is definitely a factor in the price. It has to be or else the people pricing things at Moto aren't doing their jobs. If they had a version that they sold as 3G only (no 4G upgrade stuff), i bet it could probably be $100 cheaper off the bat.

You guys also have to realize the 3G chips(mini PCI) aren't cheap.

The average MiniPCI that dell sells for 3G CDMA is $140!

My question to you all is are you going to ask to keep your 3G chip? Technically this "free upgrade to 4G" means you can keep your 3G chip..

I bet 100 dollars Motorola is going to take those 3G chips that you all OWN and re-sell them. Any takers?

I wonder what the xooms major tablet competition is??

Oh yeah that's right!
The iPad, & iPad too which both can now be bought for 500$ or less.

It's simple motorola, stop locking boot loaders and drop the price, pwease :'(

If microsoft worried about a loss, the xbox would be dead years ago.

A big company like motorola should know what long term profit is, unless they have absolutely no confidence in longivity of google's tablet plan. Which may well be the case.

Not shocked at all. Whether the price is justified or not, it still it too high for an introductory product. It's a new mobile OS on a new tablet so having the only model priced that high already spelled doom. Like I said before, they should have released the wifi-only model first and then came out with the 3g/4g model WITH 4G already built in. Not sure if VZW made them come with the 3g/4g model first for advertising (because we haven't seen any advertising from Motorola themselves) but the wifi-only model would have sold a lot better. Which takes me to my next point, where is motorola's advertising? Are they just hoping VZW does all the leg work? Anyone notice that Apple does their own marketing for their products while the carriers just talk about the phone being on their network? How come motorola isn't actually marketing the features of the device and leaving it up to VZW who shows a futuristic ad with a guy hoping into a space ship with thunder and lightning in the background where most people do not relate to? How about showing someone doing real things WITH other people on the device? Sheesh

But having that high price tag, you gave people an easy choice in picking the iPad 2. The 4G phones aren't costing anymore than the 3G ones so anyone allocating the inflating cost to the radio is going a little overboard. This will go down like the Nexus 1. A good device, poor advertising, high price and small sales numbers. Most of the people that are buying these things are just anti-apple (just because it's cool to dislike Apple nowadays) and itching to have a tablet but refuse to get the iPad. But for the extra money this thing does nothing much more than an iPad that justifies a much higher price. Like I said, the price may be justified but the market dictates your price and not what you need to make your goal margin. The Xoom will sit on the shelves, the price will be knocked down (by that time, few will care) and you'll earn less margins anyway.

Damn...the guy above me hit it on the head. Xoom introductory pricing is going to be the death of it. Doesn't matter how great a product is, if you are comparing it to other similar products equally good, if not better for hundreds less, you are going to fail.

Introductory products are always expensive. Only after company makes some kind of profit and ramps up the production, will the prices go lower. It's an introductory product, a lot of resources went into designing and building their first tablet. Prices will be much lower with Xoom2.

As for the "Not enough apps" argument, get your head of of Steve Job's A$$. When the iPad was first launched there were NOT enough apps optimized for it.

Either you like to spread lies or are just misinformed. I will give you the benefit and go with the second.

There were 2000 apps that were available for the ipad the day BEFORE it was released.

This does not include all of the iphone apps that would run on it, but look like crap.

Are there even 2000 xoom apps available yet?

I don't know the current number for Honeycomb optimized apps, but a lot of the Android apps in general already work really well for the Xoom. SNESoid and Connectbot are two I use in particular that are just the phone version, but they work much better on the Xoom's form factor.

I keep reading the articles about how iOS users spend so much more money than Android users. Well that may be true but being cheap is hardly the reason, how about the fact that Android is far more customizable and the apps in general are lower cost or FREE. When the iPhone launched there were NO APPS at all, in fact jobs snowed everyone by saying they would use web based apps while he figured out how to scam them all with the market.

I had the iPad1 and sold it 6 months later. How many of the 65,000 apps are worth anything or are over priced, I can say there is a lot of free crap and plain old crap in the apple market. This alone was a reason to ditch my iPad and now with the XOOM I see a real need, flexibility and it will meet my needs.

If apple wants to be really innovative, how about letting me run my iOS apps on my late 2010 MacBook Air (which is an iPad with a keyboard) that way my money would have been wasted.

So don't forget to pay jobs 30% for the privilege of shopping in his store.

They are not locking the bootloader here though. :/
