Most laptops released today are not going to be able to run Battlefield 3 and consumers are ok with that. The reality is that you get what you pay for. People are ok with not paying $2k for a laptop and they understand that not having the greatest laptop means that they are not going to be able to do things that people with Alienwares can.

Cheap Android phones are not going to run every latest update because their hardware is already pretty outdated (technology is older). Also, the computer hardware world moves fast. Your Core 2 Duo laptop probably can't even do Blu-ray well and that chip isn't even that old.

The reason why Apple can update its phones is because the OS is a grid of icons...

While i agree with your point, your examples aren't accurate. PCs are generally based on either Intel or AMD. As such, the OS - driven by one company - pretty much avoids fragmentation.

Android doesn't have a maniacal leader at the helm. As such, the ecosystem incentivizes fragmentation.

Umm... My laptop runs BF3. I play it while at the college quite often. Though this seems it's not the main reason for this thread.

I think when people say fragmentation in Android they mean the general operating system. A $3000 laptop will look and feel the same as a $300 netbook. While in the of android, manufacturers puts on their own crap to try to standout from competion and the fragmentation.
