I did the dirty flash (did not do factory reset) and lost root. When I try to update SuperSU binary, installation fails. Any idea what could've happened?
Which recovery do you have. Is it still custom recovery?

If you still have custom recovery, just download the following file to your phone and flash it in custom recovery
Team Epic Root From Recovery

EDIT: I just restored a TWRP backup and I'm back on rooted LJ7. I guess I don't really need to update to MB1.
So why replace the current "How to Root The Galaxy S3" Threads? Because Samsung Changed the playing field. With the LG2 Update, Samsung added 2 files that made rooting just different enough to make us change the way we did things.
/system/ect/install-recovery.sh & /system/recovery-from-boot.p
What these 2 files did, caused the phone to look for stock recovery every time the phone was booted. If stock recovery was not found it was re-installed.
See the second green box in the first post, here: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...e-updated-how-root-your-sprint-galaxy-s3.html
I suspect whatever method you used to root did not remove these files, and when you rebooted as part of the update the stock recovery was reinstalled.
Sorry this took so long. Had a little emergency out of town...
This will be the way to manually update your phone if you are:
Rooted or Unrooted - Stock Rom with all needed bloatware and Stock recovery. Note: You must be current and have MA6 on your phone before using the update file.
Download the following update zip and place it on your external sd. Go to settings/security and make sure unknown sources is unchecked. This may be unnecessary.
To check your current version, go to Settings, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap About device. Check the last 3 digits of Baseband version and Build #. They should be either LJ7, MA6 or MB1.Hi,
I've followed these directions and it didn't work for me. I verified the zip file contains the update contents, but when trying to update, it reports "assert failed" then "error in zip, status 7". I'm pretty sure I have MA6 installed. How can I tell for sure?
No. The LJ7 ROM was Jellybean version 4.1.1. MA6 updates it to JB 4.1.2, which has a few enhancements and bug fixes. MB1 was, it is generally believed, a bug fix to MA6.I'm not even sure I understand what the purpose of this update actually is? Is this to reset the phone so I can install the latest hacked root ROM?
Ah, you ARE rooted. So you probably have either CWM or TWRP recovery. See the part in the instructions that says "stock recovery"? That's why it won't work. If you're on CWM or TWRP, go straight to Post #2.My phone is prompting me to install the update from Samsung, but it fails because I have the hacked ROM on there, so I was directed here.
This is how you apply the MB1 update If you are rooted, and not on the stock recovery. If you are already on Jellybean (LJ7 or MA6), you can skip the instruction that says to do a factory reset. And no, you don't need to use the odexed and deodexed, just one of them. If you don't know what the difference is, just choose Odexed. Deodexed is better if you plan to do a bunch of customization (adding themes, for example), but odexed will be {very} slightly quicker running. What you need to do is:The next post from Skunkape60 describes the odexed MB1 and deodexed MB1. What are these for? Do they both need to be installed? Will this completely wipe out my phone, as the post seems to indicate?
Thanks,
Dave

Are you currently rooted? If so, these directions won't work for you.

So, now how do I remove all the samsung crap applications?
Just upgraded my stock rooted sprint gs3 to 4.1.2 MD4 and now my Wifi Tether does not work. Anyone know a fix for this?
