Your way to update to MD4

So weird, i was able to get Root Checker Basis to say Successfully Rooted by going to Application Manager, Force Stopping SuperUser, hitting Clear Data then running Root Checker Basic and it said Successful. I guess Im ready to proceed with Post #2 in this thread. SuperSU now installed successfully. Crazy

UPDATE:

I installed the firmware and ROM and everything worked great. Thanks!

The OTA is what clobbered your original root. Once you're rooted, you don't ever want to accept an OTA. Ususally, the OTA will fail on a rooted phone, but sometimes it seems to go through, and if it does it will definitely wipe root. I'm guessing the issue with SuperUser, after you rooted, was that it had some cached data that prevented RootChecker from having root access, and clearing data wiped that out.

Glad you're back to "normal."

Katara, there's no rhyme nor reason anyone has ever figured out how the OTA updates roll out. Some get them quickly, some get them later.

You can try to force the OTA through by going into Application manager, scrolling right to the "All" tab, and locating "Google Services Framework." Tap there, clear data, and force stop the app. Some say doing this will get you the OTA quickly. If you don't want to do that, post #1 of this thread has the instructions for manually loading the update to your phone.

You can either download the zip file directly to your phone, or download it to a computer and copy it to your SD card.

Here's the deal people, I still can't manually update my galaxy s 3 to md4 (which the update is official from sprint) although I know download the zip, clear Google services, reboot, update profile, etc, it's not working for me, and it's already a month since sprint released the update and all my friends got the update, live in Brooklyn, everytime I try the zip file thru stock recovery it keeps on giving me the e file verification error, is there anyone here with a simple solution how to solve this issue (I am not rooted)

OK...download and install 7Zip. It is a program that unzips compressed files. You can find it on CNET . com. You will need this program. Next, go to rilco12 . com. Click Downloads>Galaxy S3 (SPH-L710)>Stock ROMs>JB>MD4>No Data Restore>Unrooted. Select the .exe file. When it is downloaded, create a file folder and rename it to MD4 on your desktop and move it from your Downloads folder. Open 7Zip, and You will have to navigate to your file in question, most likely Computer>C:/>Users>Your PC User Name>Desktop>MD4. Highlight the file and click on the blue minus button labeled Extract.

You will get a new window, and the file you clicked will be highlighted in blue. Next to it should be a box with 3 dots in it. Click on that and another window will come up with your files on it, scroll down to the MD4 file, and click on it once to highlight it. then click OK. Let it decompress everything, and you will find a folder called ODIN OC meaning Odin One Click. Open that folder. You will see a program in it. Double click on that and another window will come up with MD4 Stock Restore on it. Power down your device, but make sure you have at least a 70% charge. You will power up in Download mode, which is Volume Down, Home and Power at the same time. A warning will come up giving you a choice to push volume up or down. Push Volume to Continue. Connect your charging cable to your PC, and on your screen the Odin window will show one of the boxes to say COM and a number. Your PC may have to load drivers and talk to the phone for a few minutes, maybe up to ten, but once you plug in your device, DO NOT UNPLUG IT. Once it says the COM and a number, click the big start button on the bottom. This will start to flash the new ROM. This also may take about ten to fifteen minutes. Be patient. When it's done it will have a green box saying pass, and you can unplug your device.

Read this a couple times. If you have any questions you can PM me.

Hi I downloaded the zip file and made sure it's on my sd card however in the stock recovery mode the zip file isn't there. I plugged my phone into the computer and the file was indeed on sd card. Any suggestions? Also I've deleted and redownloaded it as well and still it doesn't show.thanks

I've been away from the forums for the first time in years (quit smoking;took all my concentration)...last night I noticed an app in the Download section of my Application Manager, called SCloudStarter...anyone know what this is?...I knew about Paper Artist and saw the Sprint widgets...but what is THIS????

Hi, I have an SPH-L710 that's already been rooted with MB1 and CWM.

I've downloaded and installed MD4_update_FULL_Odex and Galaxy-S-fre3-MD4FirmwareModemAIO and installed them both successfully. Do I still need the SPH-L710_MB1_to_MD4? I thought that was the ROM, but when I tried to install it, it failed with an assert error. What is the purpose of this third zip?

Settings says I currently have MD4 installed now, and Root Checker says it has root access, so I guess it's not needed.

Thanks,
Alex

If you did the first 2 and were successful, then you don't need the mb1 to md4. Especially if you are already showing md4 in baseband.

I got the OTA update for MD4 and my reception has been worse (the MD1 update already made it bad)

Has this happened to anyone else?

No, it seems to be about the same for me as prior versions. If you haven't already, try updating your PRL.

If you root, you can flash any version of the modem from LJ1 through MD4, but there's not much you can do unrooted.

I recently bought a used galaxy s3 and I have not gotten any of the OTA updates. I'm still on jellybean 4.1.1 and version L710VPBLJ7. My device status says "modified" so I am assuming the phone was rooted and this is why I'm several updates behind. I would really like the multiview window option but everytime I check for an update it claims my system is up to date, even though last update is dated oct. 2012. I did a actory reset when I got the phone and they did another one at the store when I activated it, but it still says modified. I don't care about being rooted or unrooted, but I know next to nothing about what was done by the previous owner so I'm afraid of bricking my phone by trying something. What would be the easiest and safest way of updating my phone?

A factory reset will simply reset to the unmodified, original version of the last ROM installed. Try a couple of things, and maybe we can figure out what you've got. Do a screen capture of the About device page, and post it here. If a custom ROM is installed, there may be some info there that will help us figure out what it is.

If you reboot, doe the boot animation say anything other than Sprint?

Let's try to see if you have a custom recovery installed. To boot into recovery, power the phone off. Then press and hold, simultaneously, the Volume UP, Home and Power buttons. Hold them until you see the Samsung logo, and then release all three buttons. (If you release a little too early, or too late, the phone will boot normally. Just power off and try again.) Describe what you see.

If you see Team Win Recovery Project at the top, you have TWRP recovery. For now, just tap Reboot, the System.
If you see anything that says Clockwork at the top, you have CWM recovery. Depending on which version it is, you can either tap on Reboot System now, or use the volume keys to select that option and press the power button to reboot.
If you see Android system recovery, you have the stock recovery. Use the volume buttons to select Reboot system now.

Let me know what you find. Then we can decide how to update.

When rebooted it simply says Sprint. I do occasionally see the android guy on his back with an exclamation point after trying to update, but it reboots normally and no update takes effect. In recovery mode it says android system recovery. I did try running SuperSU to unroot it but it didn't change the device status from modified after reboot.

Any ideas?
