On wi-fi it will update just as if you were connected to the cellular network. Even if you're using it on AT&T/T-Mobile you're still connected to CDMA on Verizon and it should, never had such a scenario, also prompt you that there's an update. You could also just wait for someone to post it online and install it manually.
