google notification

This just started yesterday and I can't figure it out. I keep getting a notification on my phone saying "account action required" (with an exclamation point inside the triangle). When I click on it it says that it couldn't sign in to my google account, that I typed an incorrect password or my account has changed. Also I get another notification saying "sign-in error for ......com and when I click on it, it goes to the sign in page for google to put in my password. This happens while the phone is not being used by me. Does this mean my google account is trying to be hacked in to?? This is my first smartphone and first time with a google account. Any help would be greatly appreciated! This site has been awesome for the "beginners" in smartphone land.
