Why can't I receive or make a text (or an email) while on a call?

While I am talking to someone on a call I don't get emails or texts nor can I email or text. Is there a fix for this?

Sounds like you don't have advanced calling enabled on your plan or device. You don't say what service or device you have so this is a guess based on reading here.
