If you pick up the device and press the home button, it will give a short burst to let you know it's not unlocked (you have the password /pattern /code/fingerprint) wrong.
Another function is if you get a message etc, when you pick up the device it will give a short burst without you having to unlock it...
Notifications have to be turned off in a few places with the S7, have a poke around in the settings for any apps that would notify you (email, Skype, whatsap etc) and make sure they are off. They are a very complex machine with myriad settings and adjustments.
That's not even counting what Belodion asked re drops or water exposure...
