I have a LG Tribute HD phone

I had an LG Optimus and did NOT have to have mobile data on when I was connected to WIFI to download a picture attached to a text message, now I do. Why? I have my auto retrieve on and have powered down the phone. It is new. I also have to have mobile data on in order to receive mass texts. WHy will it noe work with WIFI?

MMS needs a mobile data connection.

Text and multimedia messages use your SIM card and network account. They come via the network.
You can get third party messaging apps that use Wi-Fi and use them even without a SIM...

If your carrier gives you wifi calling, and if your phone supports it, you can probably get the SMS/MMS messaging to also use the wifi system when you have wifi calling turned on.
Otherwise, SMS/MMS messaging requires mobile data be turned on and available.
