I have an iPhone friend that might convert to the Evo, but he needs to be able to send and receive Japanese texts. Is this even possible on Sprint? thanks.

I think so...

Check this out:
International Text Messaging
It tells you how to send it. I don't know the rates.

So for him, he would send a text-- "+81xxxxxxxxxx" (I think).

Also, wouldn't e-mail be better in this case? Just a suggestion. Just looking at price.
Lastly, tell him to call sprint and see how they deal with international calling and payments and wahtnot.

As far as I know, Sprint does not support unicode. Your text message will look like an alien language. :( This is why I wish I had GSM sometimes. NONE of my Asian friends use Sprint b/c of this. Most of them use Tmobile or At&t.
