having problems tethering

i'm trying to use the mobile network sharing, i can't get it to work. do i have to sync my phone before i can tether?

i get error code 67. registration failure.

i've already installed htc sync software, but when i check the box for mobile network sharing, my computer starts searching for new hardware, and it asks me to insert the cd that came with my android but i didn't get a cd.

am i missing a step here? i really thought it would be simple to tether, i must be messing up somewhere

any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are on Sprint they have disabled that ability but I found this to work.
or buy PDAnet (google it)


Setup: (This setup is not required but is what I have running when it works)
I downloaded HTC sync 2.0.4 from
HTC
Install HTC sync
Backup the Driver folder from Program File>HTC>HTC Driver
Now Uninstall HTC Sync, You only want to keep the Drivers for MNS.
Now plug in your phone go to Settings>Wireless controls
Turn on Mobile network
Turn on MNS or Mobile Network Sharing
It will try to connect but fail instead leave it. Now on the Computer it should ask to install the Android phone drivers, in this case choose manual install and point it to the drivers in the folder you just backed up.
If it doesn't ask you to install simply go to hardware management and install it manually from there.
Also I am running vista 32bit on my laptop.

Method:
Now this method works by taking advantage of a race condition in the phone.
Essentially you want to get MNS to establish a connection to your computer BEFORE the mobile network can establish a connection with internet. (Hence where signal strength and lag play a key roll)
Make sure wifi is turned off, make sure you are plugged into the computer and have installed the MNS drivers, I have USB debugging enabled but i don't think that makes a difference.

Steps:
1. Turn off Mobile Network and MNS
2. Go to Mobile network settings
3. Select Mode of Operation switch to 1x-only
4. Go back one page
5. Turn on Mobile network
6. Quickly Turn on MNS also
7. If MNS connects before Mobile network you should be tethered now If not turn off Mobile network and MNS and repeat steps 5-6.
8. If successfully tethered go back to Mobile network settings and turn Mode of Operation back to Evdo or Hybrid.

thanks for the help, i did what you said, and below mobile network it keeps saying standby for connecting to mobile network.

that seems kinda dumb that sprint disabled the option when its even in the manual. i was really hoping i could get this to work because sadly my mobile network is running faster than my cable internet in my home.

oddly enough, i turn my wifi off on my computer before i start this process, and it did recognize a new network, but its only giving me local access.

Seems like a lot of steps just to tether, why aren't you just using Pdanet?

I've found that my connection speeds with Pdanet are slower that the phone itself. I'm assuming Pdanet routes you through a proxy server thus slowing you down. How's your speed with the other method? Are you at a greater risk of attracting sprint to the fact that your tethering by not going through a proxy server?

Sorry for the barrage of questions here... last one. Have you tested your firewall with both methods? I've found that a port scanner [https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2] found numerous open ports when using Pdanet regardless of my firewall. Not a big deal, I assume the ports belong to the proxy.

just searcch market for pdanet, its free and it has the drivers you need

I believe pdanet free is a time limited ver.
Most of that verbage (which I copied from elsewhere) is to get you to understand.
The real steps are just a couple.

You can get a free version of pdanet off of droid market. Its a limited version and it only allows you to connect to http sites. Which is fine if you just going to browse online or watch hulu. It blocks https sites so you wont be able to check your online email accounts or bank accouts (anything with a secure log-on page). If you get pdanet through their site you can access anything during the evaluation period, then reverts to http only if you don't want to pay the 20 or 30 bucks (one time fee).

I use it, I like it. I does seem to slow your connection speed down though. I can still watch hulu during off peak hours on my laptop "jitter" free. During peak hour my speed drop way down. Hopefully I'll get 4G here soon.
