When you hold down the box on the lower right of the screen, it brings up the apps that are running. When you close them, does this stop the app from using battery?

Yes....but some of the tasks will be still running even after you close from recent apps menu..like whatsapp will still receive msgs and notify you and also download images and videos in background (unless u have disabled) even if you force stop d app it will be start automatically..you can hibernate apps using greenify app if u r having rooted phone.

Yeah, swiping them in the app switching menu tells the app to close. Some apps will still run background processes, or reopen in the background. Well programmed apps shouldn't use much if any power if they're not in focus, but it depends on the app, what it's doing, and how it's coded.
