GS4 Emojis

Okay... I am usually pretty tech savvy, but this one has stumped me. I updated my S4 to KitKat when it first came out. I have been using emojis ever since, except to text. I can read emojis in every social media app I have, and I can even send them in MMS, people can see them on their phones when I send them. When someone sends me an SMS with an emoji, I get texts like this =:^/ and other variations. The ONLY way I have been able to read other people's emojis has been if it is sent as MMS (in a group text, with a picture attached, etc)

How can this be fixed?

I encountered problems too with the stock messaging app, along with it being slow. Just use Hangouts, emojis work seamlessly and its a better app

I have tried hangouts with the same problems. Can only read emojis when sent to me with a file.
