Split Screen after Nougat

On T-Mobile, the changes to the split screen function seem all negative and I wonder if I'm missing something. Before, you could long-press the "squares" (left softkey) and the app you were in would go to the top and list of recently used apps would appear on bottom and one press would set one of those to be bottom of half of split screen. In sum, two presses got you there.
Now, long press does nothing different than short press (i.e., shows list of active apps). You then press split-screen icon in app you want on top half and in the bottom half is a cramped, stacked other active apps. Worse, once you get the two you want, the sizing is less flexible than it was--you can't make the bottom half app particularly small (useful in having a map on top and just the track controls from a music app showing on the bottom.)
Is there a way around this or is it another case of Google always making things worse?
