Took a few shots of a bear to show you guys. It seems to fair better in portrait mode because if you look at the landscape photo it looks strange on the left side where part of it is in focus.

Also these photos have the defocus slider set around during half way. If you go all the way it just looks a bit too unrealistic.

I just hate how you can see the line between focused and the exact point the software starts blurring. You can even see how on the right side the line is farther back making it look so artificial. I wish it was a more progressive effect.

I don't think it does too bad a job apart from that problem in the landscape photo. Some other photos come out really well and see are poor.

Here is a shot from my dslr with a 35mm prime at 1.8 for comparison

Focus on the seams in between the boards of the floor. I agree for a phone it is a nice feature. It wouldn't be a huge amount of work to make the effect progressive and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is fixed in a patch since it is not a hardware limitation.

The thing it is missing is foreground defocus. True prime lenses great background blur and in some cases foreground as well. The defocus app got an update today from the play store but it didn't tell me what was new or what had changed.

it's not really doing that bad
but on the first pic, did you see the stair on the left corner is somehow in focus?

try Google Camera Lens Blur, in term of bokeh, I find it that its the best
The most natural effect

HTC M8 is the most convenient one despite being bad or good

To be honest, they are all fairly awful. None of them offer a serious use compared to a DSLR with a wide (shallow) apeture. As Andy says, this will bring the focus on the subject only, so in front and behind will be out of focus. Also, the effect is circular, so in landscape, as Andy notes, your see the corner which is out of the effect.

If I wanted to take a decent picture with a narrow field of focus using a smartphone, I would manually add blur in Photoshop Touch (what a brilliant bit of software that is!)

Get ready to be inundated by thousands of awful background defocus images this year!
