I want to upgrade from 16gb to 32gb. Can I simply copy the contents of the current microSD card onto the new SD card and resume business as usual? Or, are there hidden files and special formatting that needs to be done?

Not that I am aware of (thats what I thought at first too) - I have gone from 2gb -> 4gb - 8gb -> 16gb, and now 32gb all the same way.

What I have always done is made an exact copy of my card and put it on my PC's hard drive as a backup. Before I upgrade, I always make sure I have the latest version of my card on my PC's drive, then I use a card reader (NOT the phone) and transfer the files to the new card that way, as it is way faster IMHO to do it that way.

It works for me! :D

FYI, the "hidden files" for android (and *nix in general) start with a period. Windows just sees it as a filename that starts with a [.].

so a hidden folder in android will be named like
.hidden_folder

copy your files exactly, and your phone and apps that are stored or store data on the card won't care that there's that much more free space :)
