...but I can't seem to figure this one out. Running stock JB, with auto-brightness off. When I go to the mail app it dims my inbox and any mail messages I read. When I go to mail settings (or out of mail altogether) the brightness goes back up to normal. Can't seem to find what's making this happen. Any ideas? Thanks.

The Galaxy S III has an option called "Auto adjust screen tone" which might be the cause of the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried turning that off and rebooting, to no avail. That did head me in the right direction, however. Turns out the problem was caused by the Settings > Power saving mode > Background color being checked. Unchecked it and voila, no more issue. Thanks again!

Makris, do you keep this setting turned on or off? I keep it off cuz I don't see any difference. Is the color/screen tone that much better if I leave it unchecked?

I have it checked because it helps save power.
