Okay, I have now synchronized with exchange.
My problem was that I assumed I needed to sync with Outlook, but in fact when I connected to my exchange accont, it grabbed everything I needed from my email, calendar and contacts...

Now I just need to purge my gmail contacts, becuase now I have a contact for everyone that has ever emailed me since the dawn of time...

I had that problem also. I need to update a few contact on Gmail also. My iPhone was putting the gooch on my Gmail contacts a while ago so I had turned synching off. I have a feeling that Android won't have that issue.

I am liking the Exchange functionality but my administrator forces a password (same with the iPhone). I'll get used to it. I love the phone.
