Water damage!

So on a recent outing to the lake my 2 month old Infuse was dropped in the water by a less then sober friend. I took the battery, SIM, and SD card out immediatly and let it start drying. As soon as I got home I placed it in a bag of rice to get as much moisture out of it as possible. As of this morning it is still a brick and I dont think it is coming back.
Unfortunatly I didnt get the insurance and I am wondering what any of you guys would do to replace the phone if you were in this mess. I really dont want to drop $600 for a new one.
Thanks

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

This happened to me this weekend as well, but mine was in a beach bag that happened to get wet some how. 3 phones were damaged. I did the same procedures as you did, it would light up saying "do not turn off while target is on"?? No idea what that meant, but then it would shut off and hasnt turned back on since.

I brought it to ATT yesterday and they said they could do nothing, but referred me to a local cellphone repair shop. I spoke with them for about 20 minutes being very skeptical. I asked for them to just swap batteries real quick to see if it was just a battery issue. Swapped batteries and the phone lit up again saying that "target". Could be a software issue now? Not really sure. I left my phone with them to do a liquid damage assessment; they said there success rate was pretty high. So for $20-30 for an assessment and possible repair, its better than dropping money on a new phone.

Just have to wait a couple days now while they do there thing. Apparently they take the phone apart and dip it in ultrasonic system to get rid of all water deposits and anything else that might be in the phone.

There is a water damage indicator on the phone, and on the top of the battery. Usually white strip on top of the battery, turns red when it comes in contact with water. The actual phones water indicator is on the back right side. Little round circle (white), turns red when comes in contact with water

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

In the old days people used to order replacement water detection dots and replace them to avoid the liquid damage exception. I don't know if that would work now.

One of my old phones (a motorola q9h global) fell into a pool. It didn't do anything. I took the battery and sim and microsd out and left the cover off. I ended up buying a new phone. Then about a week later I tried it on a whim and it worked fine. For a time.

The q9h had a physical keyboard. after a time I noticed certain letters would not be very responsive. I'd have to press them hard to get it to work. and it got worse over time. Not all of them. About 5 of them. I got to using other keys (e.g., "5" instead of "S").

From what I understand stuff in the water, deposits and stuff was likely shorting stuff out. On the plus side... no physical keys to worry about for the most part. But the same kind of stuff can still do bad things.

I read somewhere that pouring 100% pure wood alcohol through the phone might clean it, and then evaporate quickly leaving it operable. I have never tried this. I have no idea if it works, and in no way am advocating this procedure. But some people say it worked for them.

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

I did notice that both of liquid detecors ( on the phone and the battery ) were red. I have also heard there is an internal detector that would require some dis-assylmbly.

I've heard of a few differnent ways to hide the fact that the phone was liquid damaged. First one was bleach the dots. I dont know if this would work well enough to hide the red and I think liquids are the last thing I need to get on this phone. Second was to replace the dots, easy enough on the battery, but the one on the phone looks a little more complicated.

As for covering up the fact that it was liquid damaged, I have read that the mfg will come down hard on you if you warranty the phone and they catch it. Probably will stay away from that.

I did check craigslist and found a local cell repair shop that has a refurb for $400, plus they will give up to $200for damaged phones. Probably going to check on repairing and if it is gone, just buy the refurb. Seems to be my best option so far.

Sorry to hear about your phone jdauria, I know how you feel.

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

Ahh that really sucks man. But it just goes to show that you should get the insurance. It doesnt hurt for that little bit extra to be spent every month. I just dropped my Infuse and busted the screen about a week and a half ago. Insurance sent me one brand new in the box 2 days later. For $130. No matter what, I will always have insurance on my $500+ phones. Just because of a possible situation like this can happen.

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

I have never broken a phone until this weekend. I never bought insurance because it adds up every month regardless if you use it. And when you do its still a ridiculous amount to pay. Might as well take my chances at a local repair shop for $30, and buy a temporary crap phone. For $130, I can get a pretty nice phone off eBay

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

After giving my infuse to a cellphone specialist to do a liquid damage assessment, nothing could cure my infuse :(

Everytime I put the battery in it just says "Downloading Target" Any ideas? My infuse is NOT rooted. Stays on that screen forever and then the phone starts to get warm/hot. Someone please tell me that my infuse can be fixed.

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

Luckily my business line had an upgrade available, so I am getting out with only losing $200. I am hoping I can find someone that buys damaged cell phones and maybe get $100 out of it.
This phone will never even come close to water for now on. I have learned that expensive lesson.

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

Went swimming with my Infuse in my pocket. It fell out as I left the pool and didn't even remember about it until 15 minutes later. Tried drying it out and it turned on for about 15 seconds showing me the loading samsung and ATT screen. After that, nothing. At least this shows me that the screen was not damaged.

I do have insurance. Does it cover water damage?

Re: Water damage !!!!!!

At&t / assurion specifically excludes water damage.
I'm not sure where you got this from, but it is incorrect. Liquid/water damage is absolutely covered by insurance. I've got the policy sitting right here in front of me.

Yes. If you have AT&T's mobile insurance on your line, it does cover any type of liquid damage.

To file a claim with Asurion simpy go online to phoneclaim.com/att, or call 1-888-562-8662
