Currently playing media not appearing in drop down menu after update

[Android Central Question]

I have a Pixel 5a on google Fi and just updated to android 13 and after the update none of my currently playing media apps (youtube music, google podcasts, etc.) show the active media in the drop down menu when the phone is unlocked. When the phone is locked the media will appear on the lock screen and the media controls work as normal.

Pretty annoying to have to lock the phone in order to control the audio playing.

Welcome to Android Central! Just to be sure -- in the Settings>Sound>Media​ menu, is "Pin Media Player" toggled on?
