Facebook messenger won't open the gallery

I have a samsing s9. Facebook messenger will not open gallery. I think it's opening google photos instead. I've reset app permissions, cleared the defaults for gallery, messenger, and photos. I've reset, cleared cache and data, reinstalled numerous times, restored a backup for app settings, and nothing works. I've submitted a help with Facebook and no response.

It currently opens a streaming list of every file on my phone. It's crazy to.try and find the photo I'm looking for. Before it opened gallery and I could choose an album to look in. It no longer does that. I want it to open gallery again.

When reinstalling messenger it allows me to allow storage when I click the photo button, but it will not open gallery OR allow me to change what opens when I click it. I'm not talking about the camera button- I'm talking about the picture button. I've tried for weeks. Please help!

You want the default set in Gallery. Use your file manager, click on a picture file, choose Gallery, and choose Always. Then see if Facebook opens Gallery.

If it doesn't, email Facebook and let them know (Samsung S9, model number, version of Android, the fact that Gallery is your default picture app - and that Facebook isn't using it.)

Ok I'm domb lol. What file manager? I'm unsure how to do what you're saying.

You worded the problem better than I ever could and I understand EXACTLY what you were dealing with in fb messenger. Attaching Photos 100% broken with latest messenger update. Gallery (folders) not showing up anymore when you need to send photos. Only a list (Google photos). And with over 10k photos essentially useless. Your data is only as good a it is accessible. Always has been, always will be. Did you find a fix for the problem? I used APK MIRROR to download older messenger versions as far back as Oct 2018 but then I get into the problem of "this version is no longer supported" and you are forced to update messenger and it always reverts to showing no gallery, no folders, no way to use this app. Messenger Lite ironically DOES show gallery /folders and that may be my next option but not a good one. Thanks for your posting and if you have any ideas on the fix for this I would be very appreciative.
