How do I unlocked phones to use on my network?

Help with how unlocked phones use networks

If i got a new phone (Samsung galaxy S4 for example) and used a Talk Mobile sim would it still be compatible/work with a '3' network sim 10 months later when my Talk Mobile contract ends and i get a new contract or would putting a Talk Mobile sim in the phone for that length of time lock me out of using the phone with any other network's sim cards?!

Unlocked phones generally allow you to use any SIM card in them that they support. I'm sure your unlocked GS4 will let you use a 3 SIM card when you move on from Talk Mobile. You're free to use another SIM card in your GS4 even if your Talk Mobile contract is still active.
