downtune is right. The SIM you try in your phone doesn't have to be an 'active' SIM card (I have a Roger's SIM that I keep around for that - I had to trim it from full-sized to mini first though). My carrier of choice is Telus, and once my phone was unlocked (which I had to pay Telus $35 to do for me) and I wanted to test that it actually was, I powered down, removed the Telus SIM and put in the inactive Roger's SIM. Once my phone booted up, the server notification stated "Rogers" - beauty ;-)
