why is my gmail account not sending messages from samsung galaxy 3

my gmail worked fine until about a month ago; now whenever i send an email it fails with a server fail saying username and password incorrect. incoming mail works fine and I have reset the outgoing settings repeatedly, removed and restablished the account, reset the password both at the gmail end and on the phone and am still having the problem.
