Ringer keeps going mute, ugh!!!!!

I know that this has been posted elsewhere but what gives?
I don't always think to check phone and besides....it should RING.
I have missed several important calls and given my mother a heart attack by not calling her for hours (she's a little nervy anyhow )
There is no app, no security device that should be causing this.
I thought I was upgrading from Nokia to this 16 g supercool device...
but I am going to have to go w. an outdated 8 g Iphone just to get my msgs? wtf!

Welcome to Android Central! Is it that the phone's volume settings seem to go to mute on its own? Or is it that the phone's ringtone is changing to a Silent one?

If the phone gets awakened inadvertently (like if it's in your pocket or purse and the Home button is pressed), and if the volume down button is pressed multiple times or held down, then that could cause the ring to mute. Could that be happening?
