SMS in hangouts broken on nexus 5, incoming texts lock up phone

So hangouts is the default texting app on nexus 5 and ever since the 5.0/5.1 updates this app is complete garbage. When someone is sending me a text the app locks up and will not let me send any messages, so sometimes I literally have to wait 10 min for a message to show up before I can reply or send any text message, even the call history won't show up in the phone app while there are incoming text messages.

Have you tried going in to the settings, applications, all apps, go to hangouts and clear the data to reset the app? That might fix the issue.
