Why is my Notification tone the same as my Text Message tone?

AC Question

I just upgraded from a Samsung Droid Charge to a Galaxy S5. On my Charge, I set an alert tone for the Notification bar across the top to alert me to incoming emails, system upgrades, news and weather alerts, etc. I also set different tones for incoming calls, emails, and text messages. In all, 4 different tones. I can't seem to do that for the S5. I was able to set individual tones for incoming calls and emails and they work fine but I can't seem to set different tones for Notifications and Text Messages. If I set 2 different tones, the Notification tone overrides the Text Message tone. When I get a Text Message, I hear the Notification tone. If I make them the same, I can't tell if I'm getting a Notification or a Text Message without physically looking at the phone. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to Android Central! How are you setting the separate tone for texts? Are you opening the Messaging app, tapping Menu>Settings, and changing the notification tone there?

Thank you for the reply. In answer to you question, I set the ring tones by going to apps > settings > sound. Under the Ringtones and Notifications section, I set the Ringtones to one tone and Notifications to a different tone. Under the Samsung Applications further down, I set Messages to a third tone and Email to a fourth tone. When I receive a Text Message, I hear the Notifications tone but not the Messages tone. By the way, I downloaded the Zedge app where I got three of the ringtones I use. Don't know if that makes a difference or not but thought I'd mention it. Thanks for your help.

Try opening the actual Messaging app, and tapping Menu>Settings, and adjust the notification tones there. I realize that the process should ultimately be the same as Settings>Sound menu, but maybe there's a glitch.

It seems your suggestion worked. I'm now getting the Text Message and Notification tones properly. To be honest, I did not realize that there was a Settings menu on the actual Message+ app. I had opened the app before and it took me to the same screen as when I opened text messages from the main screen. I didn't know those 3 little bars in the top left hand corner actually opened a separate settings menu. I thought I had pushed all the buttons there were to push. Following your suggestion, I opened the app itself, started pushing buttons, and stumbled across those 3 bars. Anyway, everything seems to be working properly and I greatly appreciate your help.
