Do I need to reinstall credentials in the Security settings and how?

I decided to change the security of the lock screen on my phone from the simple swipe to the pattern. I then changed my mind and wanted to change it back....not so easy....after reading a few forums I cleared the credentials from the Security settings. At this point I can now just use the swipe to unlock my screen. Perfect. My question is though....how important are the credentials and should i reinstall them? And how?
