Sms message/text won't send

I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy s3 android. Why can't I send an SMS message/text to a nearby person? I am at the ocean if that has to do with anything. Even when at a restaurant it says no service available. Last year this android worked fine by the ocean. Even when I was actually on thee ocean.

Check the wifi and cell settings.. these would be the 2 areas which one needs to address when issues like this occur. At one point, even my smarty decides to close my wifi settings.. which I have to turn back on.. Remember not all wifi hotspots are free so you might need to request a pass via the hotspot location host. As for the cell service.. could be outages in that area.. and depending on if you're roaming.
