How do you know the samsung s4, s5 etc actually turn on when the screen does not work?

I would like to know how does a person knows the phone turns on if let say the screen has some problems like the screen does not show anything is there any other way that person can find out if the phone works without to depend on if the screen goes on. Excuse me if I may sound stupid but I on the other hand do not have that much knowledge when it comes to technical issues with samsung.

It's a perfectly good question. You could judge whether the phone was working by sounds, or by asking someone to call you, for example.
