How to stop spam e-mails from being downloaded?

Using a Samsung Galaxy S6, is it possible to stop it downloading the spam box (the one into which the ISP directs the e-mails it identifies as spam) from the ISP?

If the ISP has a filter that you can set, you can have it delete all the emails in the spam folder, or just delete them without marking them as spam, otherwise no.

Which email app?
Which email provider?
Which email protocol is being used (pop3, imap, exchange)?

Assuming your email app imap or exchange protocols, you should be able to pick which email folders you want to sync to your phone. Just remove the spam/junk folder from the list. That option may be in the "account" section of the settings in the email app.
