why does my screen go dark when using the phone as a phone

[Android Central Question]

I have an A50 (SMA505UZKV) when using the phone and attempting to press keys at the prompts of automated messages, my screen keeps going dark. Very annoying. I would the screen always on or at least 1-2 minute time on, when using the phone as a phone. A50 does not seem to provide a setting for this like my S5.

Have you looked at your screen timeout ? Usually by default it's set at 30 second or 1 minute , maybe try increase it.

Check the workings of your proximity sensor.
If you have a screen protector on the phone, make sure it is not covering the proximity sensor.

Welcome to Android Central! When you're reaching to tap the screen while on a call, make sure you're not getting close the proximity sensor, which is right next to the front-facing camera. Anything that the sensor detects in front of it will cause the screen to turn off, since it will assume it's sensing your ear or face, and therefore turns off the screen to prevent accidental onscreen button presses by your face.
