Is there a "deeper" reset that turning it off and back on?

I tried something with holding volume down and power but the result was some microscopic text and I didn't know what to do.

That gets you a cold reset. Volume down and power until you see the microscopic text. then wait. It asks if you want to do a cold reset and tells you no data will be lost. You have the option to wipe the device at this point but if you just let it be, it will go through a cold reset which is "deeper" than just turning it off and back on again.
