why does phone say "search history not available" and then won't find my location for Google maps?

When I want to navigate driving directions with Google maps, often the message is "search history not turned on." but it won't turn on when I push the link to do so. So, navigation won't find my current location to start navigating.

Try going in to your location settings, click on Google Location History and make sure it is turned on.

Why does search history have to be turned on to get directions?

I was in a bit of trouble and needed directions quick when I ran into this bug.
