How to sync contact photo

I want to take advantage of the higher resolution images that can now be used for Android contacts. I know I can go through the process on my android phone to go, one by one, and choose a high resolution image. But it seems that it doesn't always stick, and doesn't seem to sync with my google account. So, whenever I get a new device, I am not syncing the high resolution image.

What am I doing wrong? Any tips?

Welcome to Android Central! Have you tried adding the high res image using the Google Contacts website on your computer, then allowing that to sync with the phone?
