Is really android device manager lock my stolen device?

Is possible to lock my phone using android device manager?
my mobile was missing. i changed the new device and sign in the same gmail account into my new android mobile.so how the device manager work in my old mobile to lock the device.if unknown person use my device using hardware reset is its work normal?
i am using moto x play and marsmallow version(6.0)

Sorry to hear about your phone. Yes, ADM can lock it remotely. Just select that device in ADM. It can also help you track the phone. Whomever stole it will not be able to reset it and use it because of FRP
