Group messaging not working

How do you guys get group messaging to work on the N4? I tried the default messaging app, Hangouts, Hadcent Pro and group messages come individually, I can't see who's in the group and as a result I can't reply to everybody in the group. Phone is stock, not rooted, running 5.1.1 LMY48M.
My Moto X running on the same carrier (cricket) is handling group messaging just fine on 5.1 with stock messaging as default app. Settings seem to be identical between the 2 phones.
What am I missing here?

First, you have mobile data on, right? Group texting goes over MMS, not SMS.

Second, if you're using Hangouts as your default SMS app, go to its Settings, tap SMS, and make sure Group Messaging is checked on.
