Android Central Question

Hi, I am new to Android, just recently purchased a Pixel 2. When I swipe up to see the full list of apps (I think this is also called app drawer?) I get the most frequently used 5 apps in the top row, then in the second row I get two square tabs/links - one for a telephone contact and the other for Chrome new tab. Starting from the third row on I have all the apps in alphabetic order. How do I get rid of/close the two links in the second row? How did they end up getting there in the first place? Thanks in advance for the help!
