Need Help understanding Notification settings in Android

Windows Phones, iPhones...no issues. for some reason I have a hard time configuring notifications in Android. Last year with the P2xl and now with the 3xl...I can't seem to get it right.

With the iPhone...things like email, social apps, even sms, want to display on my lock screen, in the notification area and play every sound known to man...

years ago, I wanted to hear every sound. Now, I just want peace and quiet.

I finally figured out how to turn off the lock screen display
I finally figured out how to turn off the notification area display
I think I figured out how to turn off sound to the social apps.
I haven't figured out how to configure sound in the SMS app...the stock one.

with iPhone, I could turn off he sound per user if I wanted, or assign a specific sound to a user. Can't figure out if thats possible here.

Essentially, I want to only see badges on email, FB, Twitter, Instagram, AC, and Text. No sound on anything but text. I'm pretty sure I got in the wrong line at sign...and followed the ***** path. With an iPhone its tap tap slide...done. But on Android....its greek.

You generally change the notification sound for each app in the App itself.

For example in the default sms app it's settings, notifications, advanced, sound.
