Nexus 6 did better than I would have thought. Pixel XL 2 in particular is sharper (zoom in on trees) and does better with details in the shadows (zoom in on wall to the right). That said, the Nexus photo is certainly acceptable.

As you stated, lower light settings probably would show a bigger difference.

I was able to use Chrome while having the map feature active. Not sure what you are referring to....see photo.

I notice when I use the web or goggle maps and a phone call comes in, my lte disappears and the map stops working and I no longer can browse the web.
