The average person is not going to waste their time trying to recover info from a used phone.
If you followed the traditional wiping methods, either from the phone or from the recovery, you should be fine.

If you encrypt and then wipe you'll be good. Even if you did a custom recovery. You're encrypting the entire device and then wiping the whole thing. That's going to work well.
