Wifi-Direct is similar to, but different than Ad-Hoc wifi, where there is no need for a router.
Ad Hoc mode is a legacy protocol for Wi-Fi devices, and Wi-Fi Direct is a new innovation. With the technology underlying Wi-Fi Direct, a device can maintain a simultaneous connection to an infrastructure network – this isn’t possible with Ad Hoc.

Its mostly used to find printers, cameras, music players, and other devices as opposed to finding other work-stations or other smartphones, but it can also connect to other smartphones for games, picture transfer, etc.

According to the FAQ, you can connect with with your infrastructure mode wireless router at the same time as wifi-direct, but I see that HTC has disabled this ability, and using wifi-direct automatically disconnects your wifi router connection.

Its pretty new, and there are not a lot of devices supporting it yet.
