RCS communication coming to Google Messenger?

Just saw this article:

I'm just wondering how I'll get this for my G5. Article said available for "select" LG devices. Just not sure if Messenger will update, or if I'll receive an online update to the stock messaging app?

That, as far as I understand it, has to be a carrier-pushed update. Otherwise 3rd party messaging apps don't have access to RCS (which sucks on phones like the V20, where the only way to disable RCS is to turn off VoLTE, at least on the T-Mobile version).
