Some Emoji Not Viewable?

Has anybody else had issues with certain apps showing emoji? Texting apps and social media apps sometimes shows a tall rectangular box with an "X" inside it that I'm assuming is an emoji.

Anybody have any ideas how to get all emoji to show?

Are the emoji that aren't visible sent from friends who have iPhones? Perhaps the iOS specific emojis aren't showing up.

Oh I think that's it. But I'm pretty sure I was able to see iOS emoji on my OnePlus One with CyanogenOS. Is there a way to see them now, or will that require another ROM?

Same thing with me and so far they all come from an iPhone.

It's getting hard to communicate with my emoji-crazed friends when all their messages look like "XXXXX Right?! XXXXX Lol."

Maybe I need new friends....
