Netflix not streaming in HD?

I was streaming the same show on my Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Surface Pro simultaneously for about 40 minutes. The Note 4 used about 250mb, sp 1.3gb, which was tethered to my note 4. Interpolation to 1 hour yields Note 4-400mb ,sp-2gb. Which is in line with SD and fHD, respectively.

How much data is your Netflix using on Netflix?

The Surface Pro will definitely register with Netflix as a desktop client and definitely enables HD and Ultra HD if supported, just like a TV. For mobile devices though, it gets shadier. Sometimes it will stream on HD and sometimes it will limit to 720p. Some say the initial connection speed (when you launch the video for the first time) determines this, but so far the ones I've watched don't seem to be SD on my Note 4. Granted, I migt not be able to tell the difference between 720 and 1080, but at least my videos seem to be streaming on HD.

PS: If you stream simultaneously AND tethered, using the phone's connection, I do believe that the tether connection is favored. So, if your bandwidth is almost taken up by the Surface, that could explain why your phone is streaming at a lower resolution.

Also, if you want to fix your streaming quality, log in to your netflix account -> Playback Settings and set the quality.

I wouldn't really advise it though unless you have a monthly data limit, then it would be good to set it to medium or below (saves the GBs!)

It shouldn't make a difference whether tethering or not, since I have more than enough bandwidth. But I will try to do a single stream on the phone to see if there is any difference

Yeah on my Note 4 it doesn't use much data either to stream ... I don't think it is doing real HD :(.

I have mine set to the highest setting.

I tried to stream on the phone alone for about an hour. Still in SD.

This was more about if you're streaming HD or not .. Which it seems the Note & other phones won't stream full HD if the phone is not on wifi. You can tell the quality by the amount of data used.

Yeah. I was in wifi. I got the HD but even when I stream on LTE I get the full HD. I'm on Tmobile.
