I hope this is an okay place to post this. I could not find a better fit. I have tried to get an answer elsewhere and no one seems to have a suggestion. I hope this forum which is always helpful does...

I am trying to help someone convert from an exchange-based e-mail, contacts, and calendar on their Android phone to a new gmail account and calendar. This is an android and google account question so hope that is okay. Trying to figure out how android deals with this....

They have a google account now that they use to setup their phone and all their app purchases and phone backups have gone to that account over the years, however that account is not used for active e-mail and calendar currently. All email, contacts, and calendar has been exchange. Unfortunately the e-mail address associated with that google account is also not something they would want to use going forward, if so this would be easy...

I know pieces of this but have not put it together and need help. Since google accounts can only have one email address (ignoring forwarding and alias) I think I need to have them setup a new google account with an e-mail name that they want to use going forward. I can then set that up as IMAP on a desktop outlook client and copy over their old exchange e-mails and folders from a PST. So all e-mail is now on that new google account as it should sync back to the account. I guess I could also copy contacts over to that new google account this way? Or think I saw an export/import option, but that is outside the reason for the post unless there is input here too.

But here is where I am not clear on android...Now all their android phone backup, chrome bookmarks, etc. are on that old Google account. So do they need to continue to use that google account for their android phone login (so phone setup. backup, app purchases etc.)? Can they start using a new android login and somehow move those purchases over? Or will google/android freak out and think someone stole the phone!

Or do I need to have them just setup that second google account on android and then use that for their email, contacts and calendar and ignore email, contacts and calendar for that first login? Bottom line you want only one calendar, only one backup google account, and can have multiple google e-mail addresses (with of course multiple google accounts). E-mail only is easy, just set them up only in the android/Samsung e-mail client. But obviously I need some help on the other items like purchases which are on the "old" account/email.

Anyway, any help you can provide in sorting out the above would be great! I feel I am close to a solution but not.......quite......there......
Thanks,
BJB1

There is lots of advice online on converting from Exchange to Android. You might want to look some of those over. The more I read your post the more questions I have.

This makes no sense, I really can't figure why they don't want to use that account.

Learned something by accident when I was going through phone issues that might help you out. I have 2 gmail addresses, and both are assigned to my phone for gmail. When I was having issues, I went into the US Cellular store and the store rep was going to do a software refresh on my phone. Prior to doing that, we wanted to remove the Samsung account and the Google account. Well, he initially removed my primary Google account then went back and removed my 2nd Google account. When the phone was restarted, it wanted the information for my 2nd Google account in order for me to get into the phone. So it seems like whatever account is removed last is the one now associated with the phone. I had to find that password and get into the phone, add my primary account, then remove the 2nd account and I think then I reset the phone again. Then it was back to wanting my primary Google account for access to the phone, and I could add the 2nd account for Gmail. So I think you can make several Google accounts work, and manipulate which one is the primary. Hope this makes some sense :)

Sorry....the Google email address associated with that gogle account is not professional. Let's call it gamer email that was never used. They now need a more professional email account, let's call it pro.

All android purchases are associated with gamer login.

All current email is on an exchange server they need to get off of.

So they need to be on a new Google email and calendar, not lose their exchange history or Android purchases, and backup their phone to the new Google account.

The post was long enough so I neglected to explain the why, was not sure if relevant.

As far as converting from exchange to Google, agreed, that is a separate issue. Was just trying to explain the background. If this was just converting from exchange to Google I probably would not have posted.

Now that that is cleared up, any advice on how to do it?

Thanks,

LOL, it kind of does! And exactly what I was afraid of and not sure how to handle.

Hopefully we get some additional input... I assume when the phone wanted your second account for login it did not see any android app purchases from the first? That was one of my concerns.

I know you can setup multiple Google accounts for email and calendar, but I think only one is for purchases?
Perhaps it can backup the phone to either....

Thanks for sharing, good info to know...
