I have heard that Sprint will eventually switch from Wimax to LTE. Is there any truth to this, and if so a time frame in which it might happen?

The network vision roll out is underway, expected to be complete in 2013.

In late December (2011) some new LTE clusters have been deployed in the Kankakee, IL area, just 60 miles south of Chicago for testing.

That said there are no consumer Sprint LTE phones till the Galaxy Nexus hit's this summer

Check network.sprint.com to see the improvements. 3G has been getting better here after the iPhones killed it.

Sprint will be rolling out LTE in Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, and San Antonio in Q3. They're rolling out 15 new LTE devices this year. So far they've announced the Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper and Sierra Wireless Tri-Network Hotspot.
